This month LEGO released a brand new series of sets called Hidden Side. As the name suggests, there’s a new way to play with these sets which is done through your smartphone. It uses augmented reality to make your sets come alive and I took a closer look at the new Graveyard Mystery set to see what it was like.
Without knowing any better, you’d think these Hidden Side sets were just ordinary LEGO sets. They come in a regular LEGO box, come with your standard set of instructions, and the pieces all look like regular LEGO pieces.
The Graveyard Mystery set contains 335 pieces and comes with 4 minifigures (some even have their own mobile phones loaded with the Hidden Side app!). It’s rated ages 7+ but my 6 year old had no trouble putting it together. In my opinion the age rating may have more to do with the AR features which I’ll get more into later.
Even without the AR features, the set features a lot of fun elements including a twistable statue, a grave that opens up, and a haunted tree. If your kid is into spooky things, they’ll really enjoy playing with this set.
While a lot of the Hidden Side sets are cool and unique in their own ways, the real reason to jump into these sets is the augmented reality feature.
You start off by downloading the free LEGO Hidden Side app which is available for both iOS and Android. Note that not every device is supported so check to make sure yours is compatible before buying a Hidden Side set.
The app features a digital game which kids can play separate from the Hidden Side sets. It’s a nice bonus and helps keep you in the Hidden Side world when you’re away from the set.
The real reason to buy a Hidden Side set is for the augmented reality play. I tried it, and it's a lot of fun.
Some of these tasks were a little difficult for my 6 year old which may be why a higher 7+ rating was given to the set. Regardless of how well he did, he really enjoyed playing and kept wanting to play well beyond the amount of time he’d normally interact with a set.
The augmented reality play really adds a lot of value and LEGO did a great job with the app, and how it interacts with the Hidden Side sets.
My testing was done using an iPhone X which at times struggled a bit to keep up with the action on the screen, but for the most part ran smoothly. Those with newer devices may see better performance.
Adding augmented reality to LEGO sets was a very smart move. This new feature takes LEGO play to a whole new level and I hope it will expand beyond the Hidden Side sets, to include both new and past favourite sets. Could you imagine if LEGO added AR to the Disney Castle or UCS Millennium Falcon?Disney Infinity, the new video game from the House of Mouse, combines the cinematic wonderverse of Disney and Pixar films with their equally expansive toy universe, allowing players to not just physically play with their Disney toys, but also to digitally interact and crossover between popular franchises.
Using a device called the Disney Infinity Base, players can turn their toys into playable characters and game worlds. That means you can explore Monsters University as Wreck-It Ralph! Take a ride on Dumbo as Woody! Fight against Davy Jones as Mr. Incredible!
The possibilities are endless, thus the name, but we've got a giveaway that's ending soon. Any of us could list generic reasons to keep living if we sat down and tried. Parents, friends, children, aspirations, all the good food we’d miss… there are always reasons to live. But somehow that doesn’t help when you’re ready to deny them all.
The issue is that when you’re suicidal, you are often going through struggles that make the good things seem tiny. There aren’t big enough rewards for the deep pain you’re feeling. Or, you’re feeling so worthless, that you think the world would be better off without you (spoiler alert: it won’t be).
Maybe you’re feeling like you screw everything up for everyone. Perhaps you just lost your last friend and have nobody left to turn to. You might be stuck in an abusive relationship. Or maybe you feel so alone and broken that nobody could possibly understand.
Those are all real reasons that make life feel daunting and impossible. And it’s ok to feel this way – you’re not broken for feeling like life is harder than it’s worth right now. But we are in the right now, and who knows what could happen tomorrow or 20 years from now to make all the pain worth it.
To answer the understandable but temporary feeling that life isn’t worth it, here are some down to earth reasons to keep living, even if you may not want to right now.
Those suffering from depression often feel tired of life. “What’s even the point?” they ask. They’re not out of line — life is relentlessly tiring. Work, school, and even daily chores can become a mentally draining routine.
But instead of filling the void with positive fluff, ask yourself a point-blank question: “Do you really want to die? Or do you want a break from your life?”
So many of us (understandably) romanticize death as a sweet release from fatigue, rejection, pain, and suffering. But we forget that death is also a release from the small things that make us happy. Good food, hanging out with friends, petting a dog — doesn’t even have to be your dog.
Some of us just really want a long nap, without responsibilities hanging over our heads. We’ll never get that long nap, but ending our lives won’t help anything. There are much better ways to seek relief from pain and stress.
Whatever suffering you’re going through — it doesn’t vanish when you’re gone. You may not experience the problems anymore, but those around you will. Your family or friends will need to plan your funeral, make sense of your finances, and cope with the emotional burden of your death.
There are people that need you: your pet, your parent, your friend, or even someone you’ve yet to meet. Leaving will affect their lives, probably in a traumatic way.
And on the flip side, you might want your family to blame themselves. That makes sense! If you want to show your family how little they value you, or want to make them hurt, that’s perfectly
Find a ‘chosen family, ’ tell your folks that they don’t deserve to have you, escape with the help of one of these services, but do not kill yourself. If for no other reason: you won’t be able to see the pain you’ve inflicted.
The nature of life is ever-changing. While you may feel like you have been and always will be suffering, you won’t. No matter how long it takes, the winds and weather shift.
Sometimes it does get more difficult, not going to lie to you. But happiness is not linear, it dips up and down. You may feel like your sadness is neverending, but it’s not. Why keep living? Because, like everyone will tell you, it gets better.
Someone or something failed you at one point in your life. Family, friends, the mental health system… Maybe someone told you to suck it up, to just look on the brighter side, or to stop being a downer — like it actually worked that way. *insert eyeroll here*
Harness your spite – don’t let them win. Prove them wrong and become stronger than they ever thought you could. Show them that they don’t really know you, and you’re resilient to their toxic behavior. Find the reasons that make you want to keep living, to help others do the same.
Keep living for your dream trip to Bali. Keep living to try escargot without puking. Keep living to see yourself strong, healthy, and happy.
There are too many places you haven’t seen. Too many things you haven’t tried. Too many like-minded people out there you haven’t met yet.
Keep living to find out who you can become from here. You can be so much more than what you’re struggling with now – take it from people who have been there, or talk to them now.

What difference would it make to your stress levels if you didn’t try to be everything to everyone? Would you feel less stressed trying to meet your own (and others’) expectations? Would this create some breathing space for you? What impact would that have on your overall wellbeing?
Take a step back. Why are you trying to be everything to everyone? Is it because you think that's what's expected of you? Or is it an attempt to avoid conflict and avoid being seen to be selfish? Or is it to look 'impressive' and perfect to the outside world? Think carefully about how your motivation for trying to be everything to everyone is actually serving you. Almost every character today has to have some sort of unnatural ability that usually makes the game more engaging and fun. No one wants to play “the living simulator” and be ordinary. Below is a list of games that are sure to leave you feeling like a certified super-powered badass. Also, be sure to check out our refreshed part 2 of top games with superpowers.
Is a series of first-person games where narrative and great atmosphere are at the forefront. It’s a fairly linear affair but what elevates and spices up the gameplay are most definitely – the plasmids, or in
, they are special serums that allow genetic mutation giving you all sorts of super powers to play with. They allow for telekinesis, control over flames, electricity, the wind, projecting shields, spawning attacking crows, tentacles, mind control, casting illusions, creating mini black holes and more. In addition to that, you can sometimes combine some of these powers for different effects.
I don’t have to tell you that all the above doesn’t spell good times for anyone that crosses your path. An important thing to mention is that you can go through these games without using your powers and they are not exactly the focus of the story.
In regard to how they approach super powers. They will make your playthrough easier but are not necessary to go through the game. They are also presented as tools and whether you use them is up to you. In this series, powers are more stealth based but are fun to use nonetheless and are further expanded in the sequel due to two playable characters.
The games are set in large open stages that offer multiple paths to go through and plenty of enemies that will give you a run for your money if you are not creative in using your powers. When you master powers of teleportation, illusions, power over the wind, transforming and a few others and make fools out of the enemies either by sneaking by or picking them off you will truly feel like a badass.
A bit different. Mostly in the sense of how powers were portrayed. Sure the sequels dumbed down the magic system a bit but in the original, powers were all over the place in a good way as there was power over fire, lightning, shield projecting, ghost weapons, force pushing, summoning, speed charging, mind controlling and more and they all look flashy and powerful. Plus, when you add a semi-open world, good and evil morale system that changes your character appearance, you get a power fantasy worth playing. PSI-OPS: MINDGATE CONSPIRACY
Lets you take control of a superpowered amnesiac taking down a terrorist organization known as the Movement that is led by a bunch of his old friends who are also superpowered badasses. Superpowers are a big focus of this game, both from a narrative standpoint, and the gameplay. As you go through the story you unlock telekinesis, remote viewing, mind drain, mind control, pyrokinesis and aura view and all of them are integral to moving through the game.
Back in the day, it was one of the rare games to feature such abilities that you can freely use to play around with enemies, but if you decide to try it out today keep the release date in mind.
Although this game got some pretty bad reviews, bare with us. I can’t, for the life of me figure out how no one expanded this concept. A wide variety of mutant powers has always been at the forefront of
Comics and movies. So when this game came along and offered you to make your own mutant and chose whether you side with Magneto of Professor X and play out a relatively dynamic story it was a dream come true. Sure, the combat was a bit repetitive but replay value was there and you could find a use other X-genes to upgrade and change your offensive, defensive and utility powers to wreak havoc on the enemies. MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF MORDOR
Works best when viewed as a whole experience. So powers of your character are not the only thing that makes using them feel exceptional. It is also the context and the world that you use them in that gives you that power fantasy feel of controlling a powerful badass character. Talion has powers of a wraith at his disposal, what that means is that he can mind control everything that moves, mind read, create phantom weapons, teleport, drain, burn and explode his enemies, move fast and other.
Although it might seem more limited in comparison to other games, it is more about how well these abilities are integrated into the game world and how it reacts to them, as characters acknowledge your powers at every turn making you really feel like a badass legendary wraith that can’t be killed.
Was along with a game that is higher up the list – a game that after a long drought of open world superpower games, promised a playground with a bunch of cool abilities for your character. This time set in New York, the titular character was a shapeshifter that along with the standard, super strength, speed, and super senses could impersonate enemies and civilians, turn his body into all sorts of weapons and armors, wall run, glide and other. Shapeshifting and hiding in plain sight was a lot of fun and I don’t know why no one else took or expanded this concept further.
Is insane. Sure they are not a part of the core game and it requires a bit of tinkering with the game files. But once you get it working you are in for some fun times. Imagine the usual fun of
Some of the mods can give all the associated (or most prominent) powers of the Flash, Ghost Rider and Green Goblin (with their associated rides), the Hulk, Superman, Iron Man, Electro and others and you can switch between them on the fly. These mods are surprisingly functional and although they can sometimes be clunky as their features were brute forced into the game, they are still a lot of fun.
Today. No one would have guessed that after a fairly grounded in reality start, this series would be about superpowers. But be glad that it is because Saints Row and superpowers are a good match. The quirky style of
Series instantly springs to my mind. It doesn’t just give you numerous powers to play with but it also places you in an open world setting populated by civilians and lots of enemies so you can really feel like a badass standing atop of a building watching weakling humans scouring around their daily lives. Powers are also at the core of the game’s story and they change depending on whether you use them for good or evil. First two games focused on powers over electricity, DLC gave a vampiric spin on powers and the latest game offered powers based on smoke, neon, tv and concrete.
